The RiVision project involves the development of a smart system for the management and control of PET selective collection machines.

The following project was realized thanks to the funds won through the ecosystem cascade call NODES (Digital and Sustainable Northwest). NODES is one of 11 Innovation Ecosystems funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with NextGenerationEU funds.

NODES's goal is to strengthen collaboration between research and business to accelerate the digital and ecological transition of the Northwest's productive fabric.
To maximize its impact, the ecosystem is divided into 7 thematic areas of specialization, called "Spokes." Our project fits specifically within Spoke 2: "Green technologies and sustainable industry".

RiVision: A Smart Eco-Compactor for PET Waste Collection

The RiVision project has a specific goal: to develop a reliable, functional, and efficient reading system that minimizes the margin of error in recognizing the packaging introduced and that ensures secure data processing and credit assignment to the customer.

The challenge is to overcome existing systems, which rely on motorized belts, by introducing a more efficient solution. RiVision aims to make the eco-compactor even smarter, using a patented technology produced in Piedmont that reduces PET volume by up to three times compared to competitors. This not only makes collection more logistical efficient, but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

The Technology That Makes the Difference: Vision and Artificial Intelligence

What makes RiVision innovative is its technological approach. The recognition system is based on two key elements that work in synergy: a traditional barcode reader and a vision system managed by innovative artificial intelligence.

Unlike belt systems, which are more complex and maintenance-prone, RiVision uses a gravity-driven channel. This reduces costs, simplifies the mechanism, and makes the system more reliable, resulting in fewer service interruptions. The artificial intelligence algorithm is the heart of the project, ensuring the most accurate package recognition possible, minimizing errors.

Impact and Benefits for All

The benefits of RiVision extend to several stakeholders in the supply chain. The high purity of the collected PET, achieved thanks to the reliable sorting system, brings undeniable advantages to recyclers. Sorting waste "upstream" (i.e., at the time of collection) reduces costs and energy consumption, streamlining recycling operations.

This more efficient process translates into cost savings that, on a large scale, can also benefit the end consumer. In short, RiVision helps make the PET lifecycle more sustainable and cost-effective for everyone.
